New York Preview: Hyundai Concept Genesis heralds arrival of V8, RWD sedan from Korea

We've collected quite an archive of posts showing you spy shots of a large V8-powered, rear-wheel drive prototype sedan from Hyundai called the Equus, for lack of an official name. Things are getting more official ahead of the New York Auto Show in early April where this car, the Concept Genesis, is slated to debut. We've just received these concept renderings of the Concept Genesis that preview what we believe will become the production large, rear-wheel drive sedan from Hyundai everyone is expecting.
The Concept Genesis is clearly a large car, bigger than Hyundai's current range-topping sedan, the front-wheel drive Azera. Overall the design is fairly simple, elegant even, with a Camry-like grille flanked by a pair of headlights the quickly retreat up the car's hood. The rear continues the classy theme with what looks like a single strip of chrome that bisects and connects the two taillights. The New York state license plate is a nice touch, too.
We know nothing more about the Concept Genesis except what we can glean from these renderings, but will be sure to bring you the full scoop from the show floor of the New York Auto Show in a few weeks.

I have been waiting for this... a RWD car with the Hyundai warranty. My brother's Elantra has been great (minus the fact that it is a boring Elantra).

if you really want to know what it is going to look like, squish the front and back so its more upright, and push it from the sides. Put 17" wheels on it.
Oh look, its a Camry from Hyundai...
Not necessarily a bad thing but a far cry the BMW 6-series fighter this looks like.

Why does the Genesis look like a Camry?

I see the Koreans have continued their pursuit in copying from others. Is it really that tough to make a style for yourself? I guess they are spending so much for the warranty repairs on 10 yr old Hyundais they cannot afford to hire real designers.

While this car does look nice - it's got the Toyota snout bump and the rear fascia makes me think of the BMW 7 series and the old MB C Class Kompressor coupe.

Subaru headlamps with a Camry grille. Looks nice though.

Why does most every Korean and Chinese car look like another car... no originality here. Personally, I would rather drive a 5 year old Japanese car than a new Korean one.

Most cars borrow styling ques from any maker with good design. Stop knocking Hyundai. Many JP makers already borrow a ton of details from European makers. Nothing new here. Looks good, this design.

It looks like a bigger Camry (not a good thing). The rear looks good, it reminds me of the Jaguar C-XF Concept.

Its not an ugly car, but Hyundai is really milking Toyota designs for all their worth.
Toyota called and they want their Camry back!

It looks a lot like a Nissan Teana that I see here in China. It will be interesting what segment it is targeting and what price point they use.

RWD and performance oriented... then it could be good.
A crown-victoria replacement via korea might do well for them, but I am not so interested.
The Azera is a handsome car for it's size, as well, but again, about as sporty as a pair of "loafers."
G8 looks like much more of an agressive performance RWD sedan.

The Lexus GS for teh poor.
A V8 RWD making 330HP from Hyundai for $33k is not such a bad deal
VW - the Passat might be getting shot by this Hyundai
I just don't like the fact that they copied the design of this car, but they are jsut sketches so it might look worse when they bring it out.

This is quite the place for bashing. First of all, I think all Autobloggers know of this. The first prototype mules were caught around late 2004. Final design was approved, chosen and got started. All the assembly plants, and part suppliers would have already finished what they have to do like stamping, etc. long time ago. Now all they had to do was wait and tweak what they could as once the final design is chosen, you cannot change. The Camry-esque front end, I see it as more of a coincedence. Remember the new Mazda2 and its striking similarity to the Toyota Yaris and the Opel Corsa. Well, this is the exact same scenario, except more people are willing to throw in harsh comments of this car BECAUSE it's a Hyundai. The rear is actually quite nice as it shares its younger sibling, Elantra's looks and it is incorporated very nicely. Seeing the recent test mules, I wouldn't see the production version toned down too much except for the minor concept details such as the wheels and mirrors. I laud Hyundai for this as this is turning out to be one fine vehicle. Hyundai certainly isn't what they used to be and let's not use their mistakes as references for bashing. We have yet to wait for Chevrolet's RWD Impala and Ford's RWD vehicle and Hyundai has one right now;)

So, 0-60 in 6.5 seconds is not "sporty"?
Wrong!
I will say this, no more Hyundai's for us. My 99 sonata, gls v6...
needed new alternator @ 87K miles( which was 3 years, for me), then @ 103K, new turn signal stalk(it literally cracked off the steering wheel!), then 115K, radiator leak( and burned through to the tranny line, too)... traded at 119Kfor tC, in sept 04.. the service cventer did nto fill the radiator up when we got the new on istalled, and when I filled it up, saw more grey tranny fluid, in the radiator! the serivce center DiD NOT flush the thing before putting on a ndew radiator.
2001 Tibby: 99K( drive 35K per year)... thing needed new axle/bbearings up front. 103K< tranny near death, and 2 years left ot pay it off...dumped it for the 04 gls v6 sonata we have( we had NO choice, to be honest). the 04 has 40K on it. Tolerable, but had to get 2 rear window gaskets replaced, with the power window regulators, last Summer, at 31K miles.
Best MPG hwy? 28+, one time. Avg? 23-24 mixed.
RESALE IS HORRIBLE!
Wanted to dump it, for a Toyota, but, not going to take a 3,500 dollar hit!
Avoid Hyundai if possible. They fix stuff under warranty, but I have a life...
